Awards, up to three years in duration, will encourage researchers to build capacity and develop local, self-sustaining research teams.

These teams will cultivate international partnerships, between Irish institutions and international counterparts, leverage funding initiatives and address specific ocean and climate related challenges and opportunities.

Researchers from SIDS-based institutions apply directly for competitive calls without the need for an Irish partner.

Irish co-applicants can be included if this adds value to the proposed research.

Call Closed and Under Evaluation

Proposals must address specific ocean, climate and sustainable blue economy related challenges faced by SIDS; support the building of scientific and technical capacity to address such challenges; and promote the exchange of knowledge and expertise.

Awards can be 12 – 18 month duration (max. €150,000) or 18-36 months (max. €400,000). Additionally, they can be Desk, Lab or Field Based with up to four partners from different organisations.

Scholarships can be a Taught or Research Masters up to 24 months.

We hope to cultivate research partnerships between Irish and SIDS institutions to address ocean and climate related challenges and opportunities.

The Awards will support capacity building in:

• Ocean observing, seabed mapping, data and informatics, integrated ecosystem assessments;
• Integrated maritime policy, ocean governance & sustainable blue economy; and
• Climate science and climate services for adaptation, planning and resilience.
