For many SIDS the majority of their accessible natural resources comes from the ocean. Factors like small population size, remoteness from international markets, high transportation costs, vulnerability to economic shocks and fragile land and marine ecosystems make SIDS particularly vulnerable to biodiversity loss and climate change because they lack economic alternatives.
Ireland, as both a small island and a large ocean state, recognises the unique challenges similar nations face. We are committed to seeking and strengthening relationships as outlined in Ireland’s Strategy for Partnership with Small Island Developing States.
There are 37 Small Island Developing States around the world with a further 20 Non-Un Members or Regional Territories. They can be found in the Caribbean, Atlantic, Indian, South China Sea and Pacific.
Lets meet them.
